Professor Dr. Thothathri Venugopal, Founder Secretary, Venugopal Institute of Independent Mathematics (VIIM)
Professor Dr. Thothathri Venugopal is a mathematician, educator, researcher and academic leader with four decades of experience in higher education, research and university-level academic and administrative leadership. His academic career includes senior responsibilities such as Professor of Mathematics, Dean of Research and Innovation, Registrar (Evaluation), Director of Campus, Controller of Examinations, Director of Research and Publications, Director of University Press, Dean, Head of Department, and membership of Boards of Governors, Boards of Management, Finance Committees and Academic and Research Councils.
His academic and research interests are interdisciplinary, extending beyond Mathematics to Mathematical Modelling, Operations Research, Optimization, Graph Theory, Mathematical Logic, Artificial Intelligence, Computational Thinking, Educational Measurement, Management, Computer Applications and Sanskrit. His research includes work on Jaina Logic and its applications to Artificial Intelligence, multi-valued logic, Heyting algebra, decision-support systems, knowledge discovery, network optimization, Monte Carlo simulation, transportation models, mathematical applications, and mathematics education using technology.
A distinctive feature of his work is the integration of mathematics with technology and real-world applications. His publications include research on GeoGebra, Winplot, open-source mathematical software, visualization of mathematics, ICT-enabled mathematics education, Operations Research, CPM and PERT, linear programming, simulation, network computation and mathematical modelling. This research orientation directly supports the VIIM approach of learning mathematics through software, visualization, applications and modelling.
He has also developed an important body of work in educational measurement and human development, including the Human Excellence Quotient (HEQ), Humane Quotient (HuQ) and related frameworks, along with recent work on the Vision Excellence Quotient (ViQ) in colloboration with Dr Rachiraju Sai Krishna. These frameworks connect mathematical and quantitative thinking with the assessment of educational and human-development outcomes.
His research record includes 106 publications in WoS/SCIE, Scopus and peer-reviewed venues and 10 books, along with extensive conference contributions. He has guided 21 M.Phil. scholars and 17 Ph.D. scholars. His academic outreach includes lecture series, mathematics talks, general academic talks and demonstrative/hands-on mathematics workshops, reflecting a strong commitment to taking mathematics beyond conventional classroom teaching.
As Founder Secretary of VIIM, his present work brings these strands together through the vision of “Mathematics as a Way of Thinking”. VIIM focuses on helping learners and teachers develop independent mathematical thinking, conceptual understanding, problem-solving ability and the capacity to connect mathematics with real-world situations, using appropriate combinations of software, visualization, mathematical modelling and AI.
